GILLETT AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY 3RD ANNUAL ICE CREAM SOCIAL
NOT QUITE RAINED OUT!

July 12, 2010

 the_calm_before_the_storm_at_the_ice_cream_social.jpg

Gillett Area Historical Society’s 3rd annual ice cream social began on Sunday July 11th at 1pm and ended at 4pm after a 30 minute torrential downpour.  Many brave souls remained under the canapies outside refusing to brave the elements and head for the museum doors.

blaser_clan_at_ice_cream_social.jpgThanks to Mark Blaser , who had several antique pieces of farm equipment on display,  and to  Jim Raddant and Jerry Schneider along with Steve Frederick who brought their antique  tractors to view on the museum front lawn.   The Schneider family had an extensive display of  farm toys in the museum.
And of course, many thanks to Robert Davis, the Famous Home Made Ice Cream Maker!

The GAHS volunteers did a fine job of setting up for the social, baking cakes, serving, and cleaning up afterward, along with other duties too numerous to mention!

 the_young_at_the_ice_cream_social.jpg

Most of all, thanks to our many visitors, young and older, who made the whole day worthwhile!

Over 75 visitors toured the museum and enjoyed the homemade ice cream and cake, plus lemonade, coffee, and water --- and left very nice donations.
Joe Watts, with the Oconto Historical Soceity, guessed the exact number of rusty sqaure nails in the jar (72) and won the basket of "goodies
"!

We thank you all!!

AND THE GARAGE CAME TUMBLING DOWN

July 2 2010

museum_july_2010_nio_garage.jpg

Do you notice anything missing in the photo?  Yes indeed, it is the garage that had been added to the “house” in the early 1950s or so.  It has been taken off by Landis Excavating of Oconto.  All items that were displayed in the garage have been moved to the basement, and new identification cards will be attached in the future.  The removal of the garage was the first step in the process of restoring the outside of the museum.  A fundraising campaign will be organized soon.  Bids will be taken for restoring the siding, along with building a new back entry.  We expect this project may require between $30,000 and $45,000.  Unless of course we have contractors willing to contribute toward the cause.  Once this is complete, there may be a possibility of erecting a carriage house to serve as a welcome center, gift shop, and meeting area, along with landscaping and restoring the backyard former gardens.

GILLETT'S ONLY CASUALTY IN THE VIET NAM WAR TO BE HONORED BY THE GILLETT AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
June 21, 2010

 franklin_runge_display.jpg

Franklin Runge, Gillett native and Gillett High School graduate lost his life March 12, 1969 protecting his platoon. While on maneuvers Runge came upon the enemy getting in position to ambush American soldiers. Runge and his other point officer were fired upon, which alerted Runge's platoon of the enemies position. Runge took out the sniper in the tree and was wounded in the ensuing battle. Runge enlisted in the Army after high school, served his time, then re-enlisted August 1968 to fight in Viet Nam.
Franklin Runge graduated in 1958, achieving many honors, including Badger Boy, Honor Society and a special award created by Warren Eiseth, the KNOT HOLE AWARD, for his excellence in wood working.
The Gillett Area Historical Society has been given a display case of the many medals awarded him, the flag from his funeral, and his uniform. The book, "SHAKE AND BAKE SERGEANTS",  by author Jerry S. Horton, has been purchased and included in the display.  The book details the events preceding Runge’s death. Gillett Area Historical Museum is open May through September, Saturday and Sunday, from 1 p.m.  - 4 p.m.

Admission is free. Donations appreciated.

C & L CONTRACTING, SANDBLASTING OF GILLETT OFFERS TO RESTORE FOUNTAIN AT MUSEUM

June 10, 2010

fountain_and_c_and_l_sandblasting_crew.jpg  C & L Sandblasting of Klaus Lake Road, Gillett, has offered to restore the cast iron fountain in back the Gillett Area Historical Museum.  Plans are to have the fountain in working order in time for the Ice Cream Social Sunday July 11th. A crew of 4 arrived at the museum on Thursday June 10
LeRoy, Woody, Rudy and Willie (Not necessarily in that order)deciding on how best to dismantle the rest of the fountain,
and dismantled the fountain, loaded it on their truck and transported it to the C&L location for the process of sandblasting and then spraying with an anti-graffitti spray which should dry to the natural patina of the cast ironn and provide protection from the elements..  A color was selected for the base pool, which will be spray painted once the cracks in the sides of the pool are epoxyed and left to set for about a week. The pump to the fountain was located and worked beautifully.  There is a need to replace the tubing that will run from the pump up through the center of the fountain to the top, letting loose with a large stream of water which will come tumbling down the 2 tiered fountain and into the pool.  There is then just the need to make sure the electrical outlet is working, and then we’ll be in business!  Stop by to see the restored fountain, compliments of
C & L Sandblasting, during the Ice Cream Social.

ARE THERE SPIRITS AT GILLETT AREA HISTORICAL MUSEUM?
June 3 2010
wprs_photo.jpg             The question still remains.  Are there spirits at the Gillett Area Historical Museum?  Wausau Paranormal Research Society published their report recently on their web site at www.wprs.net.  Check out their findings regarding their visit to Gillett by clicking on CASES on the left of the screen, and then Gillett Historical Museum.  Very interesting reading.  Also a photo of the group at the museum appears on the GALLERY page.   WPRS is in the process of scheduling a return visit to the museum with more equipment and the desire to spend more in depth time to determine the reason for some unexplained happenings in certain areas.
Shawn Blaschka, lead investigator and founder of WPRS will be the guest speaker at the Gillett Area Historical Society Annual Meeting and Dinner Thursday October 28th.  Mark your calendars.  This will be one you won’t want to miss!  Good food and entertainment all in one

WAUSAU  PARANORMAL RESEARCH SOCIETY AT MUSEUM
May 12 2010
The Wausau Paranormal Research Society, www.pat.wausau.org, arrived at the Gillett Area Historical Museum at 7pm Saturday, May 1st, and left at 12:30am. Shawn, Kent, Anji, Sara & Sharon were the group of five technicians “on duty”.
Their job was to prove or disprove the stories of spirits residing in the building.
Jane Buboltz, a former owner of the house,  had requested and received permission   from the historical society to invite WPRS to the museum.  Jane met the group and they were given a tour of the building, inside and out.
They brought along the following equipment: 4 Channel - 160GB - Digital Video Recorder System (DVR), Sony digital High 8 Night Shot camera with tripod,  35mm cameras, Digital cameras,  CCTV monitor,  Trifield EMF natural meter,  Trifield EMF natural meter,  Motion detectors,  Walkie talkies,  Flashlights in assorted varieties, Batteries, Extension cords, coaxial cable, Digital cable and RF modulators,  Medical kit and Evidence bags, masking tape, chalk and tape measure.  A complete description of this equipment and their uses is available on the WPRS web site.

Cameras were placed in four of the "suspect" rooms. Their base of operations was in the kitchen.  A technician was in the kitchen watching the four rooms(where the cameras were placed) on the CCTV Monitor at all times,  recording any unusual incidences that may seem to appear .. It seemed to be a very uneventful night. . They watched the videos constantly in order to determine any findings.
A report will come through by the end of May after they have all reviewed over and over and over again the videos and any other findings.
WPRS was given written permission by the historical society to release the location of the project, along with their findings, to the public. The findings will be forwarded to Jane and the Gillett Area Historical Society.  The report will also be available  to view, when completed, on their web site www.pat-wausau.org .   Click on “Cases” on the left side of the screen.
The group was extremely pleased that they were allowed to come in and thoroughly enjoyed the entire session.

HOME IS WHERE THE MUSEUM IS
May  12 2010
betty_bday_party_1.jpg
Home is where the museum is for Betty Smith Erickson. She was born in the Victorian home at 110 W. Main St. Gillett Wisconsin on April 2, 1919, the youngest of the five children of Walter W. And Ruth Smith.
It was there that she stood at the top of the front stairs and looked so far over the rail that she somersaulted to the first floor, landing on a parasol in a parasol stand.
It was there that she worried about whether Sohr’s cows across the street would escape their fence and come into her yard.
They lived there when her father invented and got the patent for the bottomless candy pail, which was made by the family in the basement of the house.
It was there that she played for hours in her very favorite place—the third floor cupola. The little room was surrounded by windows with a wonderful view in every direction. It was a magical place—perfect for tea parties, for playing school, or for reading a book perched high above the ground.
Betty grew up and went to teacher’s college in Stevens Point. She went to Tigerton to teach. She met and married Lief Erickson (his father had been the pharmacist in Gillett when he was born.) The wedding was at the Methodist Church down the block, but the reception was held at the house where Betty was born, the house that she had always loved.
The newlyweds moved to St. Paul for Betty to teach and Life to go to the University of Minnesota Medical School. Their first child, Lief Jr., was born in Shawano during that time. Then Lief Sr. Did his internship at Milwaukee County General Hospital. Betty and Lief Jr. Stayed in Gillett near the end of his internship for their daughter Lynne to be born in Shawano.
In August of 1950 the Ericksons were reunited in Burlington, 26 miles southwest of Milwaukee where Life Sr. Began his medical practice. After eleven years the family of four had grown to a family of eight, adding sons Scott, Chris and Eric and daughter, Maren. The family returned to Gillett every Christmas and the secrets of the cupola playroom were shared with another generation. The first two weeks of August each year found the family at the Smith cottage at nearby Berry Lake.
The six Erickson children have grown up and married and have children who have grown up and married and had children. The Ericksons have 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren (with another on the way).
They were delighted to gather for the Smith Family Reunion in Gillett in 2008. They were especially pleased that the date coincided with the ice cream social and Grand Opening at the museum. That was a sweet treat for all four generations.
It was that event that gave the Ericksons the idea to rent the museum for a brunch to celebrate Betty’s 90th birthday in April of 2009. They sought and received special permission from the Gillett Area Historical Society. As the family gathered to eat in the dining room (and the living room and the kitchen) they remembered other special events celebrated there with Grandma and Grandpa Smith, and with uncles and aunts only now in their memories.
The Ericksons—and their children and grandchildren—are proud supporters of the Gillett Area Historical Museum. The children have chosen the occasion of this article to announce that they will renovate and decorate the third-floor cupola playroom in honor of Betty Smith Erickson’s 91st birthday.
The great-grandchildren all received Gillett Area Historical Museum tee-shirts for Christmas.
The next generation looks forward to happy visits to the third-floor playroom in the cupola of that beautiful Victorian museum at 110 W. Main St. In Gillett. It is hoped visitors to the Gillett Area Historical Museum will make a special point to see the “new” playroom in the attic when it is completed. The museum is now open for the season on Saturdays and Sundays,
1 PM to 4PM. As always, it will open anytime by appointment.

The article was written by Betty’s daughter, Lynne Martin Erickson.
Lynne is the co-founder of Bi-Folkal Productions, a nonprofit corporation in Madison.
Bi-Folkal produces program materials to encourage older adults to share their stories of the past. For more information, see www.bifolkal.org.

The Gillett Area Historical Society would like to thank the Smith/Erickson family for their generous support now and in the past. It is because of people like them that the historical society can continue to give the community’s present and future generations a look at their history
.

IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO MUSEUM BASEMENT
 gahs_display_stands.jpg
Spring has sprung, and a “cleanup” of the Gillett Area Historical Museum, has started!.
The electrical wiring has been updated in the basement, eliminating
old unused and disconnected wiring, and fastening all remaining wiring to floor joists.  Circuit Breaker boxes have been added.  Old unused fuse boxes removed.  An old water heater was taken to Iron Horse for added funds to our coffers.  Extra lighting has been added, in keeping with the original ceramic chain pull lights.  A railing was added to the stairway to the basement.  New windows replaced old rotting ones that had open air views to the outside!  3 pegboard display stands were built to display items currently in the garage.  Cobwebs were removed and the floor was swept.  The garage door into the basement had the linoleum removed, and now is back to it’s original garage door look,
The old 1940s electric stove was dusted off in readiness for display.  A claw foot bathtub is waiting for another set of feet.  It was originally in the upstairs bathroom, but was used in later years to “indoor” the koi from the backyard ponds during the winter.  There is an old “modern” toilet in
the basement for your “viewing not using” pleasure.  Mark your calender for the 1st weekend in May when the Museum re-opens for the year. Keep visiting the Gillett Area Historical Museum and check the on going improvements.

BILL NEUMANN VISITS MUSEUM
bill_neumann_visits_museum.jpg
On Saturday, March 6, 2010, the Gillett Area Historical Museum had a visitor who'd had the vision of preserving the past since he was in High School.  Local history was a passion.  In 2003, he gave the boost needed to make the Museum a reality -- a donation of $50,000.
This month Bill Neumann was able to make the trip to Wisconsin from Alaska, to see what his donations have made possible.  It was exciting for Don Pederson and Carol Riemer to take Bill through from the attic turret to the basement, where the Model T used to be kept, filling him in on the long-range plans as they went.
Several Board members also arrived to welcome Bill to the Museum.  During that visit, he presented GAHS with another check for $25,000, which, on our part, was a real confidence booster that we are on the right track.  Our gratitude goes out to Bill, to the Ebenreiter Family Fund, and to the people in the community who have backed us in our effort to preserve the history of the area.

GILLETT AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TEA AND TOUR OF HOMES A SUCCESS!

VOLUNTEERS SERVING BEHIND THE SCENES

2009_christmas_tea_volunteers.jpg

The Gillett Area Historical Society 6th Annual Christmas Tea was attended by almost 100 people, most of whom also toured the decorated museum across the street from the tea,   purchased items from the gift shop, tasted Christmas candies and visited with friends.  The Tea, held at the former Sohr house and graciously hosted again by home owner Deanna Smith, went exceptionally well.  It was considered one of the best attended Christmas Teas.   Guests checked their coats at the front door, and purchased tickets, then strolled inside to view Deanna’s home and holiday decorations, take plates of delicious cakes, and bars, along with their choice of Wassail, Tea, or Coffee, and relax a short time at one of the many decorated tables.  Then it was on to the Tour of Homes.  The Richmond Street home recently received an award from the Oconto County Historical Society for their renovations … a work in progress.  What a beautiful house if is.  The owners were kind enough to tell great stories of their renovations and have a photo album available to page through.  Cookies and coffee were available.  The home on Garden Street, a short distance from the Museum was beautifully decorated, and photos were available also of the renovated kitchen.  A short history was given of the home, including the conversion of LB Stuelke’s office into a bedroom with a doorway into a small sitting room/porch.  The aroma of Christmas was wafting throughout the home.

The Christmas Tea brought into the Gillett Area Historical Society almost $1000.00.  The hard work of all the Volunteers helped make it a success.  Those who helped decorate the museum, decorate Deanna’s house, baked the cookies and bars, made decorations for the tables, and volunteered their time to sell tickets, wash dishes, help serve, act as docents at the museum, and fill in where ever needed during and after “Tea Time”.  Special thanks also to the Tour of Home owners who helped make this new addition to our Christmas Tea an exciting event.

And now to make plans for next year!  If you have any comments or suggestions please e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

REMINDER!  SATURDAY DECEMBER 5TH
A disheveled couple showed up early at the former Sohr house for the 2009 Christmas Tea.  Tickets were found in their pockets, so they were allowed to wait on the front porch area, and were served a pot of tea.2009_christmas_tea_sohr_house.jpg No cakes or cookies were available yet however.  They plan to stay at least from 1pm to 4pm on  Saturday December5th, and will be watching visitors stroll over to the Musem.

COMING SOON! GILLETT AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY CHRISTMAS TEA & TOUR OF HOMES
The Gillett Area Historical Society will be holding their 6th annual Christmas Tea Saturday, December 5 from 1pm-4pm.  The Tea will once again be held at the former Sohr home, 129 W Main St Gillett, hosted by the current owner, Deanna Smith, and decorated for the Holiday Season.  Hats, gloves and period clothing are optional but encouraged.  Homemade desserts made from recipes of Historical Society members, freshly brewed tea, coffee, along with the traditional Wassail will be served.  The Gillett Womans Club will again be offering their seasonal Fruit Cake for sale during the Christmas Tea.  The Gillett Area Historical Museum, at 110 W Main St., will be open and decorated for the holidays.  The traditional large tree in the foyer will greet folks entering the front door of the museum. New this year is the Christmas Tour of Homes.  Stop by the museum during the Christmas Tea, view the many “new” additions to the museum, and pick up a brochure which includes a short history of the homes on the Christmas Tour of Homes. Directions to these homes are included in the brochure.  Later plan to stop at Zippel Park for the City’s annual Tree Lighting ceremony plus other activities, sponsored by the Gillett Business Association.
Tickets for the Christmas Tea remain at $6.00 purchased prior to the tea or $7.50 at the door.  The tickets can be purchased at The Cutting Edge, 207 E Main Gillett, Webman Design, 134 E Main Gillett and through any Gillett Area Historical Society member.  Contact Deanna Smith at 855 6439 or Nancy Smith at 855 2514 for tickets and information, or

GAHS FIRST “HORSE DRAWN WAGON TOUR OF HISTORIC GILLETT” A SUCCESS!

wagon_tour.jpg

On a crisp, chilly autumn day, with the sun shining, groups of people headed out for the Narrated Horse Drawn Wagon Tour of Historic Gillett.  Dale Schaal volunteered his horses and wagon and, along with the assistance of Nancy Schaal, sat in the “Driver’s Seat”.  “Rodney Gillett”, with the assistance of Kurt Darrow, gave a brief story of his life at the start of the tour inside the museum front foyer, and the group then moved outside to board the wagon for the narrated tour.  The tour traveled the streets of Gillett as “Rodney” pointed out points of interest from bygone years.  Each tour lasted 45 minutes with the team of horses making 3 trips.    In the meantime interested  visitors watched quilt tying being done by Donna Buboltz and family in the upstairs suite while downstairs Don Pederson’s collection of local area Indian artifacts , along with antique firearms were on display and got plenty of attention.
Many people enjoyed the hot apple cider, pecan torte flavored coffee and cookies that were available in the museum kitchen.  Approximately 35 people were able to enjoy the wagon tour, however several others could not be accommodated due to the time constraints of the horses and wagon.  The tour was well received, and it may become an annual event.  It is hoped next year an additional wagon can be added.   Other ideas are in the works to make it even better.
The Gillett Area Historical Society expresses many thanks to Dale Schaal and Nancy Schaal for their contributions of time and wagon and horses for the event, to Donna Buboltz and family for their time and talent with the quilt tying exhibit, and to Don Pederson for his ever popular display of artifacts from the Gillett area, including his antique rifle collection.  Visitors also browsed the museum and looked over pictures and books in the Museum Library.  A fine fall day was enjoyed by all.

GAHS FAIR BOOTH HAS MANY VISITORS
August 29 2009

ice_cream_social_2009_066.jpg

The weather cooperated for the 2nd annual Ice Cream Social of the Gillett Area Historical Society Sunday, July 12th.  Over 85 people strolled through the museum, and then out to the grounds to partake of various kinds of cake, along with home made ice cream.  Lemonade, coffee and water were all available to quench one’s thirst.  Thanks to the Gillett Fire Department, a 1925 Chevrolet fire truck, one of the first operated by the Gillet Fire Department made it’s way to the museum front lawn.  The special display of the Gillett Fire Department History was available.  Folks checked out the list of fires from 1905 to about the 1950s.  The first fire alarm, when the GFD was formed in 1905, was a false alarm!  Other memorabilia was available to peruse.  A great day to visit and remember the history of the Gillett!  Thanks to all who came to make it a success!

90th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED AT GAHS MUSEUM

 mom-dad-cu.web.jpg

The Gillett Area Historical Museum was reserved on Saturday, April 18, 2009, to celebrate the 90th birthday of Betty Mae Smith Erickson, the youngest daughter of Walter W. Smith, the original owner of the house. Nineteen family members and friends were present for the momentous occasion. The honoree strolled throughout her former home, remembering events of the past, and enjoying the present. A buffet style lunch including  an assortment of desserts was furnished by her family and was enjoyed by the guests.  Displayed books were read, museum gift shop items purchased, pictures taken and video cameras were running. The new basement steps were viewed by Mrs. Erickson, with the admonition that no, it might not be wise for her to attempt the steps without a railing. She is very pleased with the progress the museum is making.

GAHS CANCELS CORN BEEF & CABBAGE DINNER

The Gillett Area Historical Society reluctantly made the decision to cancel the annual March St Patrick's corn beef and cabbage dinner this year based on the rising costs of ingredients. The number of tickets necessary to sell to make a profit did not seem possible based on past years attendance.   It is hoped a special event can be planned for the Spring re-opening of the Museum.  Plans for the dinner may be reviewed for 2010

MUSEUM "UN-DECORATING"

The Month of January has brought a few hardy volunteers out to un-decorate the Museum and  store the Christmas decoratations away for another year.  More items are being accessioned, and furniture has been moved about.  The gift shop is back at it's usual place downstairs, and there are still items for sale.  2009 Calendars are still available with various pictures of the Old Gillett Area representing each month.  E-mail us or call if you'd like to purchase one.  They are a great keepsake and only $10.
Keep checking our web site, as Weman Design has indicated they will try to establish a separate page on the web site for our Newsletter.  The page will allow the newsletters to archived and available for view if you missed any.  The December newsletter should be appearing soon.

GAHS MUSEUM GEARING UP FOR WINTER

The Gillett Area Historical Society is incurring added expenses as the winter season is upon us.  It was found shortly before the Christmas Tea that a heat exchanger needed to be replaced on the furnace.  A heating contractor was called and spent most of the day Friday the 5th of December making sure the furnace was in perfect working order for the Christmas Tea.  The Musuem was a cozy place to be on the 6th of December.  The bill of about $600 brought the donations "Thermometer" down a bit.  Museum windows should be "winterized", and other areas "winter proofed".  The Museum is looking forward to an exciting Spring opening!

GAHS 5TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TEA AT MUSEUM A SUCCESS!
who_is_this_old_lady.jpg

A Ghost from Christmas's past at the former Smith House was seen roaming about the Museum during the Christmas Tea.  She was wearing Joyce Driscoll's dress and hat and hair, Gwynne Smith's wife Alice's necklace - a Christmas gift from her husband, and Gail Smith MacSwain's shawl, all of whom were members of the Smith Family.
Margaretha Gerlach Meyer, daughter of Rev Gerlach, pastor of St John's Lutheran Church, loaned the Ghost her beaded purse and white gloves.
The tea was deemed a success for a Museum first.  Guests enjoyed a variety of cookies and bars along with their choice of tea, coffee or wassail. Seating was available in the living room, dining room, library and upstairs suite. Visitors were able to stroll about the Museum and view the various displays, as well as purchase stocking stuffers from the Gift Shop.  Unfortunately it was necessary to remove and store temporarily some displays to make room for guests. The large Christmas Tree, a tradition  in the front Foyer was a favorite attraction, along with the Christmas decorations throughout the Museum.  Drawings were held every half hour for small prizes.  As the day came to an end, volunteers cleared up the area, and discussed  how to make it even better next year, based on suggestions from members and guests. The GAHS thanks all volunteers for their work before during and after the tea, and special thanks to all those folks from near and far who came to the Christmas Tea at the Museum.

MEMBERS ATTEND 1 DAY SEMINAR IN NEW HOLSTEIN

Several members of the Gillett Area Hstorical Society attended a one day seminar in New Holstein on Saturday, July 26th.  Much useful infomation was learned on fund raising.  Members were also able to tour the Timm house, built in 1873 and had just undergone a one million dollar renovation.  The Timm House Musum displays the house as it was used in the lives of residents in 1873.  The New Holstein Histocial Society also has a second Mercantile type building downtown that houses artifacts from separate areas of life, and also a huge button collection that was 80 years worth of collecting by one lady.  It was felt the fee of $10 per person to visit was well worth the cost.

The Museum Grand Opening "Cake" Dontated by Mort Gentz

The Gillett Area Historical Society's Grand Opening was a success.  Two hundred and thirty people went through the Museum, and 200 were served cake and home made ice cream.  The Gift Shop did a booming business selling the new 2009 calendar, along with t-shirts, denim shirts, pottery, coffee cups, and can cozies. A big item of interest was the 1926 Model T Coupe parked on the front lawn.

 gahs_grand_opening_model_t_car.jpg

Men enjoyed the car and the many farm items donated.  The ladies, of course, liked the furniture, dresses and hats.  The first Gillett Fire Dept. uniform jacket and cap was donated and on display, along with a ledger book from the first meeting when the fire department organized on May 2 1905.

Thirty Five various cakes were donated by society members, such as chocolate, lemon, spice, pineapple upside down and many more.

The GAHS was able to raise $1800 to help pay off the purchase price of the museum with the help of Gillett Area residents and former residents, in addition to the many out-of-towners interested in the museum.  Many thanks to all!

GAHS MEMBERS ATTEND WAUSAU WORKSHOP

Four members of the GAHS, President Carol Riemer, Treasurer Deanna Smith, Secretary Heather Fifield and Board Member Theresa Paulson attended a weekend workshop in March sponsered by the National Trust for Historic Preserations and underwritten by the Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville Wisconsin. The members applied for and were granted a scholarship to cover the cost for this event. Topics included Funding, National Trust House Museums, Creative Programming and Historic Structure Reports, along with round table discussions on various topics, including Collections, Serving the Community and New Solutions. The GAHS members were able to make personal contact with many people who had a wide variety of experience on national, state and local levels. These people will be able to give GAHS guidance on making the "Smith house" into a museum that will reflect the heritage and culture of the entire Gillett area.

In addition, speakers covered topics such as how to apply for grants and how to turn visitors into members and donors. Forms were provided which included blueprints on how to maintain a historical house.

The seminar was well organized and very informative. Look for more updates in the future.

MUSEUM PURCHASE

We could have named it the Bill Neumann-Gillett Historical Society, for Bill was the one who had dreamed of there being a historical museum in Gillett since his high school days. After college he went to Alaska to work, and lives there still. He still thought about the possibility of a historical museum in the city where he, his parents and grandparents had lived. One day he informed the City of Gillett that he would donate $50,000 to get a historical museum started.

When the City of Gillett was designated a Main Street Community, it was the right time for Bill’s dream to take wings. The Main Street Program, Revitalize Gillett, Inc., has four standing committees: Organization, Promotion, Economic Restructuring, and Historic Preservation. Out of the Historical Preservation Committee the Gillett Area Historical Society was born.

As of November 1, 2007, the GAHS has found a home, purchasing the three-story Victorian-style home at 110 W. Main Street, known locally as the "Smith House." This house is familiar to many for its beautiful architecture, complete with turret. The home sits on a large lot with mature landscaping and a huge backyard that will lend itself to various outdoor activities.

There are twelve rooms on the first and second floors and a large open third floor which may be dedicated to archival storage. There is also a full basement which can be used as a work area and storage.
